South Korea top destination among Chinese tourists

Counterfeiting is a sensitive Topic

“Counterfeiting is a sensitive topic. Everyone knows more or less what is at stake, but for brands, it can be a very difficult subject to deal with,” said Edward Marienbach, an expert on monitoring technology and trace and one of the authors of the report.

Concerned about the lack of a coherent national policy, and potentially international, strategy to fight against counterfeit wine, advisors have recently published the report, which includes ambitious proposals for the use of technology, communications, legal action and training as against measures. “The CNCCEF believes it is their duty to publish this study, despite the opposition of an important wine council and the Minister of Agriculture,” wrote the commission.

Their assessment of the problem is revealing. “For every bottle of real French wine in China, there are at least a bottle of French wine counterfeiting, and the situation is getting worse. It is huge,” said James Roany, former president of the Wine CNCCEF & Spirits commission and a business consultant.

The advisors believe that the problem also contributed to lower sales. “The situation of French wines and spirits imported into China has deteriorated significantly since 2014,” the report said, blaming the decline on high tariffs, predatory pricing, the discovery of other wine regions, but especially, distrust Chinese wine consumers “often reputed to be counterfeit.”

“So we feel [it is] all the more important to spread this study so that accurate and operational measures can be quickly implemented to stem the scourge of counterfeiting.”

In China, he alleges, the major counterfeiters are importers, distributors and sub-distributors.
